King Edward Medical University is one of the most esteemed medical universities in Pakistan. If you do not know, it is one of the oldest medical institutes in South Asia and the oldest medical college that existed even before Pakistan Existed. As the name suggests, the British Raj established it, and they named it after Emperor Edward the Seventh.
The university was established back in 1860. We will share a more detailed version of its history and background in the article. In this blog, we will talk about different programs offered at KEMU as well as the admission process. We will try to cover it in detail.
It is the dream of every medical student in Pakistan to study at KEMU, we hope you are excited too. If yes, then we will not delay any further. Let’s start talking about KEMU! MDCAT is mandatory for admission to Ing Edward Medical University Lahore.
History
As we have discussed in the introduction, KEMU is the 4th oldest medical college in South Asia. The British Raj established it as Lahore Medical School in 1860.
It was also the third medical school in the subcontinent. Dr. J.B. Scriven was the first principal of this medical school. Initially, the classes were divided into a Hindustani class and an English class. After two entry tests, 49 students secured admission. 44 out of these went for Hindustani class while others went for the English class. Out of these students, only 27 were able to graduate.
In 1871, Mayo Hospital became the teaching hospital for Lahore medical school. But most of us know it as KEMU. But why have we been calling it Lahore Medical School up until now? This is because the university didn’t have its current name until 21st December 1911.
Lahore Medical School was affiliated with Punjab University in 1871, and until 1877, two more hospitals were added for teaching purposes. These were Lady Aitchison Hospital and Lady Willingdon Hospital. It got the status of a university on the 12th of May, 2005.

Eligibility criteria
The first thing that is the most important is the Eligibility criteria. You cannot apply for anything if you are not eligible for it. So, we are writing about it first. Read the criteria carefully so that you do not end up wasting your time. The following are the eligibility criteria
- Students must have done FSc pre-medical or any equivalent program
- The student must have scored at least 65 percent marks in FSC and MDCAT
- Foreign candidates who have completed an Intermediate or comparable course in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics must hold a British IBCC Certificate.
You must also understand that as a responsible citizen, you must not submit any false information to manipulate your way through this criteria. Because if you are caught, your admission will be suspended, you will be blacklisted and you may also be fined or punished as per the policies.
How candidates are selected?
Candidates are selected based on the policies set by the Admission Board. The Chairman Admission Board will correct any errors or omissions in the Selection List. Merit will be followed strictly. If you are below in the order, you will not be granted admission instead of the one above you in any case. Also, If two or more candidates are bracketed, that is, if they have precisely the same percentage after calculation, the older candidate is given preference over the other. If there is still a tie, admission will be determined on the Matriculation result (SSC or equivalent).
How to calculate aggregate?
This calculation is clear and simple. There is no rocket science involved. All you need to do is apply the following formulas.
- (The Marks obtained in Fsc/ Total marks in Fsc) x 50 —- Formula A
- (Marks obtained in MDCAT/ Total marks in MDCAT) x 50 ——— Formula B
All you have to do now is add both answers. You will get your aggregate. It is important to consider that KEMU may change its policy for calculating aggregate. For example, they may want to add matric marks. Or they can also consider changing the percentages of either Fsc or MDCAT. Regardless of these changes, we will update you regarding these matters on this website. So make sure you visit us for regular news and updates.

This is why the admission process always takes so long even though there are just about 300 students in each batch. The admission board verifies everything.
